Thu Mar 05 13:19:02 CET 2026

The unique research apparatus for nuclear and advanced materials research has been moved to the Czech Republic from Karlsruhe, Germany. It was originally operated by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission.

The Surface Science Laboratory Station (SSLS) was oficially inaugurated in the presence of representatives of the European Commission, the Czech Academy of Sciences, ministries, industry and partner institution on 12 February 2026.

SSLS is a large laboratory station with ultra-high vacuum designed for detailed study of material surfaces using advanced spectroscopic and analytical methods.

SSLS will be operated as part of an emerging joint laboratory platform that will enable the systematic development of open access to infrastructure, support for excellent research, and the effective transfer of knowledge to the application sphere. It represents a significant milestone in international research cooperation and strengthens the Czech Republic's capacity in the field of nuclear safety research.
