Japan becomes an associated state to Horizon Europe

From January 2026, scientists and representatives of the private sector from Japan can participate in the calls of the 2nd pillar of Horizon Europe under the same conditions as associated countries to this EU programme.  

Japan joined Horizon Europe at the end of December 2025, becoming one of the largest associated countries to the programme. The official signature will take place in 2026, but applicants from Japan can already participate in Horizon Europe calls from January this year. 

Japan thus confirms its role as a major partner of the EU in the field of research and development. The signing of the association agreement will strengthen this cooperation. It will allow Japanese partners to coordinate projects of the Framework Programme. More information can be found here.
