Science|Business reflects on how scientific values have been eroded by conflict and sanctions as a result of the war in Ukraine.

Since February 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine, the list of sanctions has been expanding, banning joint research and educational projects with Russian institutions as well as the export of critical technologies. International cooperation became a discussed topic with regard to academic freedoms and the use of scientific cooperation as a communication channel with Russia.

Science|Business has compiled a list of stories related to the war in Ukraine and its implications for science and technology. For example, Germany was the first EU country to announce the imposition of scientific sanctions on Russia already in February. The US, EU and Japan have imposed technology sanctions. The "naive" era of scientific diplomacy is over, because not all cooperation is "pure". Although G7 ministers spoke of freedom and democracy as the basis of scientific exchange, the international scientific community remains divided on the justification of scientific sanctions against Russia, etc.
