Fri Mar 14 11:14:20 CET 2025

Representatives of 32 European science academies have signed a letter sent to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and two other European Commissioners demanding funding for the next Framework Programme (2028-2034) of € 220 billion.

It was signed by, among others, the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, and representatives of the academies of sciences from Germany, Sweden, Belgium, Denmark, France, and Ireland.

In the joint Open Letter, the science academies make three demands:

  • The creation of a “comprehensive and strong Research Framework Programme” to strengthen Europe's competitiveness and resilience,
  • Substantial funding for the next Framework Programme (2028-2034) of € 220 billion,
  • The establishment of mechanisms at EU level to encourage individual nation states to invest in research and development.
