Breaking the "glass ceiling": interviews with women leaders in academia

Fri Mar 22 15:27:52 CET 2024

Listen to 15 podcasts with former and current female rectors of European universities about their journey through the academic hierarchy - one of them is the Rector of Charles University, Milena Králíčková. The latest Global Gender Report showed that the Czech Republic, together with Italy, has the lowest number of female rectors in Europe - only 10%, compared to Norway - 41%.

Even at the level of professors, the proportion of women in Europe remains low: the percentage of professorships increased only marginally between 2015 and 2018, from 24.1% to 26.2%, while men were twice as likely to hold positions at a similar level.

Also, a 2023 report by the European University Association – the largest university association in Europe – showed that less than a fifth of university leaders are women among its 850 members.

In this context, we recommend watching the recording of Cristina Soler's lecture, which mentions, among other things, a German experiment aimed at increasing the number of female professors and implementing measures supporting gender equality in the academy.
