Euratom is a programme for nuclear research and training, complementary to the EU Framework Programmes. The programme is always established for a period of five years and then extended for another two years in order to be in line with the duration of the EU Framework Programmes. Euratom aims to increase nuclear safety and radiation protection and to contribute to the decarbonisation of the energy system.

The indirect actions of Euratom focus on two areas:

  1. Nuclear fission and radiation protection
  2. Fusion research aimed at developing magnetic confinement fusion as an energy source

The direct actions of Euratom are research and innovation activities carried out by the European Commission through the Joint Research Centre (JRC).

A major change from Horizon 2020 is the opening of MSCA actions also to nuclear researchers.
